Somy HVAC company is offering to install a UV bulb system with 2 bulbs and a carbon filter. Specifically, the APCO-X from Fresh-Aire UV for $1,600 installed. I've been using them for 7 years now and I believe the price is fair. I do have severe seasonal allergies and get colds frequently (2 kids) and live in South Florida where mold is everywhere.

Dependingon the lens, water isn't a big issue, but mud is killer, since the grit can scratch your lens. A UV filter makes sense here. There is indeed a difference between $40 and $100 UV filters. Part of it is just brand - B+W tends to be more expensive than Tiffen, IIRC - but to some extent the more expensive UV filters have superior coatings
